Police Corporal Jonel Nuezca, 46 years old shot dead the unarmed victims at close range on Sunday, December 20 in Tarlac Province.

The suspect killed Sonya Gregorio, 52, and her son Frank Gregorio, 25 in front of his daughter who triggered the massacres. The actual scene was captured on a video and has gone viral on different Social Media platforms with hashtags #StopTheKillingsPh, #EndPoliceBrutalityPh, and #JusticeforSonyaGregorio.

Netizens are raging with anger for extrajudicial killings are rampant in the Philippines since President Duterte was elected to be the chief executive of the country. This shows how authority, power, social control, and influence can encourage human rights violations and abuses.

Lt. Col. Noriel Rombaoa, chief of Paniqui MPS confirmed that the killings happened because of the confrontation between the two parties over “Boga” (a popular noisemaker for Filipinos).

“Bago ‘yung pamamaril, nag-ugat ito sa pagpapaputok ng boga malapit po sa place ng bahay ng mga biktima kasi itong suspect po at mga biktima ay magkapit-bahay lamang. So itong suspect natin ay pumunta doon sa bahay ng biktima para sitahin ‘yung nagpapaputok then nadatnan niya doon ‘yung isang biktima at nagkasagutan sila, ‘yung lalaki,” he said over ABS-CBN’s Teleradyo earlier today.

Sonya Gregorio and Nuezca’s daughter also had a confrontation prior to the incident where the cop felt insulted and lead to the shooting.

According to Rombaoa, the suspect and victims were also involved in a land dispute regarding the right of way, as the house of the victims is located behind the house of the suspect.

Nuezca surrendered to the Rosales police station in Pangasinan province nearly an hour after it was reported. He is now under the Paniqui police custody. Justice should be served!
