The number of new Covid-19 cases in the Philippines especially in Metro Manila has recently increased. On Monday, health authorities recorded 5,404 new coronavirus cases, the new highest data for 2021. Given the fact that some hospitals are at capacity to treat critically ill Covid-19 patients, Malacañang said the government is not considering reverting to the most extreme type of group quarantine.
After Indonesia, the nation has the second-worst outbreak in Southeast Asia, with over 622,000 cases and nearly 13,000 deaths.
According to researchers, the coronavirus is spreading at nearly twice its previous pace, and the country could see up to 8,000 new cases every day by the end of March and up to 18,000 daily infections by mid-April. The current outbreak is being fueled in part by four new, more transmissible coronavirus strains.
Just a few weeks ago, Metro Manila mayors expressed interest in letting teenagers aged 15 to 17 go out after the government allowed more businesses to reopen. The greater cause now, according to health officials, is that more people are going out, eating in restaurants and at the homes of their relatives and friends, and congregating in large, crowded groups.
To close this gap, the government has reinstated a curfew in Metro Manila from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Some cities are once again prohibiting the purchase of liquor and demanding quarantine passes.
Minors in Metro Manila will be prohibited too from leaving their homes for two weeks beginning March 17, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA). The MMDA said in a statement on Tuesday that due to the growing number of Covid-19 incidents, all 17 mayors in Metro Manila decided to ban minors or those aged 18 and under from going outside.
At the moment, a full-fledged nationwide lockdown was still out of the question as the Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said.
