Samsung’s watches have long been something of an anomaly. While the company embraced Wear OS (then Android Wear) in its earliest days with the massive Gear Live, the company quickly shifted to Tizen, an open-source operating system largely used by Samsung for wearables and smart TVs.

That’s no doubt been a kind of bugbear for Google, which has long struggled to crack a significant portion of the smartwatch market. Samsung, meanwhile, has had its share of success with its products while doing its own thing. But there’s always more market share to be grabbed.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic are the first watches developed on a platform capable of providing Android users with a reliable smartwatch in a long time.

Samsung has rushed in and built something wonderful after an eternity of waiting for Google, Fossil, Mobvoi, and the rest of the Wear OS ecosystem to get its act together with smartwatches.

Galaxy Watch 4 is extremely similar to Samsung’s previous smartwatches, which is mostly a good thing. Both have circular OLED watchfaces that can be programmed to be on all the time. They aren’t overly huge and have a good fit and workmanship. They’re not quite as well-made as an Apple Watch, but they’re getting there.
